BJ250 A2

In 1994, two years after the start of selling in Japan, the first Estrella BJ250 A2 appeared in the shops of the German Kawasaki dealers.

German 1994 Estrella BJ250 A2
Japanese Estrella BJ250 B2

German Estrella - Japanese Estrella
A German standard Estrellas can easily be distinguished from a Japanese standard Estrella by the round mirrors (E) and the bigger round indicators (C). They have probably been changed to fulfil the European respectively German import and admission standards.
This might also be the reason why German (European) Estrellas have different carburettors (F). The German carburettor has a different interior and also a different carburettor cover. All German Estrellas produces only 17 instead of the Japanese 21 PS.

All German BJ250 As were originally sold with saddle (like the Japanese B-version), but porter racks (A) on the back fender instead of pillions. So, the German version has no second pair of foot rests (G). The double bench of the BJ250 C can be installed, but in many countries the papers have to be changed!

None of the German Estrellas ever had hazard lights (D). All German A-versions had the same Estrella logo (B). This logo was only used in 1992 for the BJ250 B1 in Japan. The BJ250 B2 from 1993 already had a different logo.

Estrella BJ250 A3
In 1995 the successor, the BJ250 A3 came onto the German market. The most important difference was, that from the 1995 models on all German Estrellas were fitted with carburettor heating. The position of the rectifier changed too.

While the Japanese B4-model from 1995 already had shock absorbers without reservoirs, the German 1995 A3-model still had shock absorbers with reservoirs. 1995 was the last year of the A version being officially sold but it is said that the last maiden like BJ250 A left a Kawasaki shop in 1998.

There may be two reasons why the BJ250 A was no big success in Europe:

1.

Even though many riders liked the unusual a beautiful saddle, they wanted to take a pillion rider with them.

2.

More often, the Kawasaki dealers heard the sentence that the Estrella would be bought at once if it had more cubic capacity and power ...

Differences between A2 and A3

The red-black BJ250 C and the green-white BJ250 A can easily  be distinguished. But what’s the difference between an A2 and an A3? The first admission day is no indication!

First, the rectifier was behind the side cap. From the A3 on, the position was in front, under the tank (photo left). But there is an easier way to find out if it’s an A3 - without going down on your knees. The A3 was the first European Estrella with carburettor heating. The cable is easy to find (arrow on the photo right). Any carburettor heating advantage? No!
